Work of University Baseball Squad

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University baseball squad is now having its fourth week of practice in the Cage, and the work seems to be well advanced for so early in the year. The batting is not quite so satisfactory as the rest of the work, but this is easily accounted for by the fact that the pitchers had two weeks' start over the rest of the men and have not been favoring the batters with easy balls. Coach Mathewson's three weeks' work with the pitchers ended last Saturday and was in every way a success. The squad made excellent progress under his direction and appears to be an unusually strong staff for a college team.

The hope of keeping last year's infield nearly intact has been upset by the withdrawal of H. McCall '09 from College. McCall returned after the mid-years and practiced for a while with the team. He was offered a good position, however, and did not feel able to decline it, especially as he had completed the required work for his degree. For his place at second base and for the vacancy at third there are a number of good candidates, and the race for these two positions promises to be a keen one.
