Review of Rowing for the Week

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

During the week the University and Freshman crews, have been out regularly, but the wind has been so high that most of the work has been done upstream, although the University crew took a long row in the basin on Wednesday. On Tuesday there was a second cut in the University squad, two eights being retained. The work of the crew has been harder this week in view of the fact that the race with Columbia comes on April 17. The boat has a tendency to rise and fall instead of gliding smoothly and evenly, and Coach Wray has been laying special emphasis on getting hold of the water firmly at the catch and pulling the oars through evenly. Yesterday the second crew tried the new Crowninshield shell, and went better than they have so far this year.

The orders:

University crew--Stroke, Sargent; 7, Waid; 6, R. Cutler; 5, L. Withington; 4, Bacon; 3, Faulkner; 2, Lunt; bow, E. Cutler; cox., Blagden.

Second crew--Stroke, Richardson; 7, P. Withington; 6, Hooper; 5, Smith; 4, Waite; 3, Loring; 2, Forster; bow, Whitney; cox., King.

The Freshman crews have shown a slight advance during the week. The first crew is still inclined to fall over at the catch and all the men are slow with their hands. On Wednesday, L. D. Smith, who has been rowing No. 4 regularly in the first boat, was unable to go out on account of a bad foot, and he will not be able to report for about a week. Amory took his place on Wednesday and on Thursday Leslie was substituted for Amory.

The orders:

Freshman crew--Stroke, Newton; 7, Metcalf; 6, Strong; 5, Higginson; 4, Leslie; 3, Balch; 2, Richardson; bow. Wiggins; cox., Voorhees.

Second Freshman crew--Stroke, Howell; 7, Anderson; 6, Amory; 5, McCabe; 4, Hoar; 3, Weston; 2, Trumbull; bow. Smart; cox., Faxon
