State Tennis at Longwood Today

The tournament for the singles championship of the State of Massachusetts will commence this afternoon on the fine grass courts of the Longwood Cricket Club with a total of 73 entries. A special interest attaches to this tournament, for over 50 per cent, of the men entered are at present in Harvard or have been connected with the University. The champion for 1910, who will meet the winner of the tournament in the challenge rounds, is N. W. Niles '09, who is playing even better this year than last and should hold his title with-out effort. In the upper semi-final of the draw, it seems reasonably certain that H. I. Foster '01 will have as his only serious opponent A Sweetser '11, for the past two years University champion. In the next quarter, R. Bishop, also '01, should win his position in the last quartet without much difficulty, though H. C. Johnson may spring a surprise. E. H. Whitney '14, last year's national interscholastic champion and semi-finalist at Newport, has drawn a very easy quarter and will probably meet the winner of the match between A. S. Dabney, Jr., '10, and F. J. Sulloway '05. The last named should have a very close match with the odds in favor of the more steady Sulloway. While these results seem likely now, upsets are apt to be registered by any one of the present Harvard team or by a number of past Harvard champions. It is planned to have a match played every day until the semi-finals, which will probably take place Wednesday, with the challenge round on Saturday.
