The following figures of the registration in various departments of the University are of interest, especially in connection with those of the corresponding period, as near as may be, of the previous year. In comparing the numbers for the two years, however, it must be borne in mind that in the case of Harvard College great changes have been made in the method of registration. Last year upperclassmen with entrance conditions were registered as Freshmen, and there were something short of one hundred of them. This year such men are registered as Sophomores. Even after this deduction has been made, the number of Freshmen does not represent the number of new men admitted, for it still includes men who have been dropped from the Sophomore class on account of failure in the work of their Freshman year. These amount each year to something like fifty. The number of newly admitted Freshmen registered this year is probably slightly larger than it was last year.
A similar allowance must be made in the Junior class, for this year men are not registered as Juniors who have failed to pass their oral examination in French or German. This accounts for the considerable difference in size of the Junior and Sophomore classes in the two years.
The only considerable loss of students is in the Law School, and that is due to an increase of severity in the standards for allowing men with deficiencies in their work in the two upper classes to continue in the School.
