MAJOR SHANNON SAFELY LANDED

In Letter to Colonel Azan He Speaks Highly of French People.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The following letter was received recently by Colonel Azan from Major James A. Shannon, former commandant of the R. O. T. C., who is now with the 42nd or "Rainbow" Division in France. Somewhere in France,

My Dear Colonel Azan:

As you see, I am now in France, and delighted to be there.

The strict censorship regulations prevent my telling you many things that I think would be interesting. Our trip over was uneventful. We did not see any submarines or have any excitement.

I admire your people greatly. The splendid spirit of the women who have suffered such terrible losses and still keep their lively, friendly ways, the stern determination of the men and the bright, happy little children all appeal strongly to me. I am proud to be among them.

I look forward to the day when this war shall have been fought to a victorious end, and when you and I and my other friends can have a reunion here in France. Please give them all my kindest regards.   Your sincere friend,   JAMES A. SHANNON,   Major, U. S. A.
