YALE REGISTRATION DWINDLES

ENROLMENT FIGURES AT NEW HAVEN INDICATIVE OF DECLINE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With several hundred undergraduates either having failed to return to College since the Christmas recess or having left since that time to enlist in some branch of the national service, the university registration at Yale has fallen to approximately 1,500 men. When the college began the past fall, there were about 1,900 enrolled on the registrar's list, but since then undergraduates have been leaving rapidly.

A year ago the registration at Yale was more than 3,300. The present wave of departure is accounted for by the knowledge that the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, to which about 900 of the undergraduates belong, will be called upon by the Government in a few weeks. Many of its members are taking advantage of an opportunity to spend a short time at home before finally entering military service. When the call for members of the corps to report is made, it is estimated that the college membership will fall to about 1,300.

Abandon, Buildings

As there has been such a marked decrease recently in membership, the university officials intend to close several of the college buildings in order to conserve coal. Probably none of the halls used for lectures and class-work will be included among the buildings falling into disuse, although the faculty plans to close a number of dormitories which are only partially filled.
