TRACK SEASON UNSUCCESSFUL

Severely handicapped by the lack of experienced runners, and laboring under the same difficulties as the other athletic teams, the University track team made the poorest showing of all this season. The waning interest in this form of sport at the University the same shortage of field event men which has been difficult to overcome in recent years, and the short time available for practice combined to make this year's schedule far from successful.

The track season opened unofficially with the annual mid-winter carnival which extended from March 8 to March 13. As a result of the inclement weather as well as undergraduate indifference the carnival was only sparsely attended, and no great amount of interest was aroused by the results. The most striking feature of the meet was the unusually prominent part played by the Freshmen, who furnished a majority of the winners.

The first outside meet in which the University engaged was with M. I. T. on May 8. The Crimson team was defeated 67 to 50 points. The important trial of the season was the triangular meet with Princeton and Yale at New Haven, in which the University was last with 13 points. A. Stevens '19 was the individual point winner for the Crimson squad with a first in the hammer throw and second in the shot put. Others who scored were E. E. Lucas '19, second in the mile; D. J. Duggan '20 and Captain H. D. Costigan '20, second and third in the half-mile; and P. E. Stevenson '20, with third in the 440-yard dash. Only one place was secured for the University in the I. C. A. A. A. A. meet in Philadelphia last Saturday, Stevens winning fourth in the hammer throw.

B. Lewis '20, the fastest long-distance runner in the University, was captain of the team until his departure for the Fourth O. T. C. He was then succeeded by H. D. Costigan '20.
