BOWDOIN PRESENTS GAME TO CRIMSON IN FATAL SECOND

HARDELL AND WALKER PITCH STERLING BALL

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

It took only one inning, the second, for the Bowdoin nine, with an assortment of, errors and walks, to present yesterday's game to the University. In that frame the Crimson collected six runs, to which they added another tally in the eighth, leaving the score 7-4. Outside of the fruitful second and the first--when Bowdoin collected three tallies--the game was a pitchers' struggle.

Hardell, starting on the mound for the first time since the Army game over a month ago, held the visitors to six hits. But his greatest strength was in pitching out of bad holes; twice he retired the Maine batters after they has filled or partially filled the bases. Walker, the young pitcher opposed to him, was no mean opponent. Allowing only one more hit than Hardell, and fanning nine men, except for the second inning he never allowed the University to hit two in succession. His fast outcurve was particularly effective.

Two changes made in line-up

Coach Slattery made two changes in his line-up; Jones, formerly heavy hitter on the second team, was tried out at first base. Although he played a strong game at the initial sack, he was unable to keep up his record for hard hitting. Blair, at the plate, replacing Gammack, although at first a little uncertain in his peg to second, steadied down as the game got under way.

In the opening inning it looked as if the University was about to throw the game away in one inning, as in other games. Needleman, first up, singled, then Hardell walked Smith, the two coming in on Morrell's three-bagger over Frothingham's head. Then when Lincoln overthrew first Morrell tripped home with the third tally. But after that the Crimson tightened up, Blair throwing out Doherty on an attempted steal to second and Hardell striking out Handy.
