SEASON OPENS JANUARY 18

Prospects for a successful season for the Freshman basketball team are excellent; the members of the squad who have been having long drills in the fundamentals of the games under the supervision of Coach Wachter have developed into a smooth running team. Close observance of the rules of the game has been required of the men who are learning to play according to Coach Wachter's system so than they will be familiar with it when they become candidates for the University five next year.

In preparation for the match with the Dartmouth Freshmen that is scheduled for January 18, the men have practiced various scrimmage formations such as the five-man defense, the roving back, back court passing, and short passing. L. Gordon, acting captain, who has had four years' experience at the Gloucester High School and in the Y. M. C. A., is playing a consistent game as a forward, and is an excellent down-the-floor player.

Stevens a Fast Forward

D. H. Stevens, who is playing opposite Gordon, has proved to be an unusually fast man, covering his section of the court effectively, and working well with the other men on the team. His passing is good. J. H. Sipps, the center, is not tall enough to get the "jump" but he carries out the other functions of his position well. One of his best qualifications is his endurance, as the center must follow the ball continually up and down the floor.

J. L. Rudofsky has been assigned to the only stationary position on the quilted, that of permanent back, who seldom comes down the floor as his position is like that of the defense quarterback. It is his duty to cover any man who breaks through and starts for the basket. Rudofsky has shown great skill in sizing up and breaking up plays than threatened to end in a tally.

The leading candidates for the other guard position, the roving back, and I. Black and P. Jerkins. Due to his experience as a football player, Jerkins has proved to be very effective in this position, which calls for much aggressive playing. Black, However, is also putting up a strong bid for this assignment as he has shown great speed in carrying the ball down the floor and returning to his position in the defense.
