PROFESSOR PALMER AT APPLETON

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Very few of the present Senior Class have ever heard of the great Harvard professors who became famous in the nineteenth century,--such as William James and Josiah Royce. Another man who ranks with these is Professor George Herbert Palmer, who has consented to conduct the Class Day services in Appleton this year. The talks which he gave to the Seniors on Class Days before 1917, when he retired from the position of Class Day Chaplain were among the most impressive events of the week.

A former Chairman of the Class Day Committee wrote, "Of all the events of Class Day week, the one that will ever remain in my mind as the most memorable, and by far the most valuable, was the chapel service on Class Day. What Professor Palmer said hit exactly the right note, and it is no cause for shame that many a Senior had his eyes filled with tears when he filed out. Although the service lasted only about three-quarters of an hour, I am sure that we all would willingly have sat there indefinitely, so impressed were we by what was being said. From start to finish, the chapel was as quiet as a cemetary". The Senior Class is greatly indebted to Professor Palmer for his kindness in giving to it a privilege which the graduating class has not had for five years.
