After three weeks of practice in the cage, Coach Young was able to put his Freshman baseball squad through a long outdoor drill yesterday afternoon for the first time this season. This squad of 74 men is the largest in the history of Freshman baseball at the University.
Among the candidates who have shown up well so far are J. W. Hammond, who has had four years experience on first base at Roxbury Latin School, and Clark Hodder, Captain of the hockey team. He has been on the Newton High School squad for four years and is a valuable man in the outfield. W. B. Pringle is among the second basemen who should develop into good material, but he will have close competition from G. K. Gordon who is a veteran of the St. Paul's nine. A. W. Samborski, who was the yearling basketball leader, was an infield regular for four years at Westfield High School.
Coach Young has worked his battery men into encouraging shape during the four weeks of light practice, and some good material has been developed in the process. E. C. Herman seems to be a strong bidder for the box honors, but he is closely rivaled by J. E. Toulmin. Two left handed pitchers will be at Coach Young's disposal as R. W. Rawlings and F. G. Akers, with three years of baseball work at St. Mark's, should develop into ready substitutes. S. A. Straw is the outstanding catcher on the squad at present, but it is too early and the nine has not had enough chance to work-out yet to pick a first-string team.
