1927 TENNIS PLAYERS DOWN INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONS

Lenhart Comes From Behind to Capture Feature Match From Newton Star

The undefeated Freshman tennis team continued its string of victories yesterday when it sent the Newton High School team, fresh from a recent triumph in the Yale interscholastic meet, to a 6-3 defeat on the courts of the Brae Burn Country Club at West Newton.

The first singles contest proved to be the feature match of the day and it was somewhat of a surprise when Lenhart finally emerged a victor over Turner after three hard-fought sets. Turner had led the Newton team to the interscholastic title at New Haven last Saturday, winning the individual championship himself, but today his consistent playing to his opponent's back-hand proved his undoing.

Johnson, national boy's champion, playing number two for Newton, was forced to show his best tennis to win a 9-7 set from Captain Gordon. The contest turned upon the first set, however, and with that in his possession he found little trouble in out guessing and out-manoeuvering his opponent.

Singles--Lenhart (H) defeated Turner (N), 6-1, 3-6, 7-5; Johnson (N) defeated Gordon (H), 9-7, 6-0; Thompson (H) defeated Martin (N), 6-4, 6-4; Jackson (H) defeated Wales (N), 6-8, 6-2, 8-6; Parker (H) defeated Rice (N), 6-2, 8-6; Pratt (H) defeated Goodman (N), 6-4; 6-1.

Doubles.--Turner and Johnson (N) defeated Gordon and Thompson (H), 6-3, 6-4; Martin and Wales (N) defeated Lenhart and Pratt (H), 6-2, 6-4; Jackson and Parker (H) defeated Rice and Goodman (N), 6-2, 6-2.
