501 CONTRIBUTE TO LAST WEEK'S HARVARD FUND

MANY LETTERS OF APPROBATION ARE RECEIVED

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

During the third week of the Harvard Fund, 501 men contributed to it a total of $11,165.30. This represents a larger number of contributors than the first week, but less than last week. The total amount, also, while considerably above the best total of any week in 1926, is under the total of either of the first two weeks of this year. By Saturday, April 2, 1,695 men had given to the Fund $52,751.55. At this point the Fund has more than one-half as many subscribers as it had in 1926; and has collected approximately 42 per cent. of its 1926 total. This has been accomplished in three weeks.

Since last week's report several classes have changed, positions on the list. The Senior class, it will be noted, has gone well into the lead with 84 contributions. The class of 1908, which is in third place, is only one contributor below 1907. The class of 1897, which is fourth on the list, has moved two classes ahead of 1899, which is now sixth. The class of 1896 has moved from seventh place to fifth.

Letters approving the Fund are being received with increasing frequency in the office of the Fund Council. If few of them show the candid eagerness of one contributor who wrote, "Please mail me another blank so that I may send more soon", the large majority are generously enthusiastic over the subject. The significant fact is that more and more of the Alumni are coming to realize that the Fund is for the many rather than for the few. "Being hard up myself", says one man, "but not wishing the gift to fail of unanimity." Another one writes:

"This is the errand. Though a holder of no Harvard degree, my nearly seven years here has made of me a pretty affectionate sort of adopted son. I therefore wish to be on the list of contributors to the Harvard Fund, not because I hope to enrich Harvard in a material way, but simply as an expression of belief in her."

The Council feels that this is the finest sort of testimony and well worth reprinting here. Ten weeks now remain before Commencement. On Monday and Tuesday last 220 men contributed $9,604.46 to the Fund. The Council therefore anticipates tomorrow the conclusion of a record week.

The standing of the highest 20 College classes through April 2 is as follows:

Class of 1927, number of contributors, 84; 1907, 63; 1908, 62; 1897, 51; 1896, 47; 1899, 47; 1902, 41; 1892, 39; 1920, 39; 1911, 38; 1915, 38; 1894, 36; 1904, 36; 1910, 36; 1923, 35; 1898, 34; 1900, 34; 1922, 33; 1918, 32; 1887, 31.
