Announcement was made yesterday by Robert Gilmor Jr. '31, that the G. C. Loening Prize of $1000, recently presented to the Harvard Flying Club, will be used to pay off part of its loan, made several years ago.

The prize, awarded to the Club at a dinner in New York attended by Miss Amelia Earhart, Commander R. L. Tower of N.C.-4 fame, and other notables of the air, was given to the Harvard flyers on the basis of their record covering the period from April 1, 1929 to January 1, 1930. The committee which made the award took into consideration the fact that the Harvard Flying Club is the only college flying organization in the country to own and operate its own plane successfully. At the same time it has flown more hours during the period considered than any other college.

The members of the Flying Club who accepted the gift in behalf of the organization were: President J. M. Smith '31, R. B. Bell. '30, and H. H. Timken Jr. '30.

The $1000 will be used to pay off the last of a sum lent by F. L. Ames '26, president of the East Coast Aircraft Corporation. In doing this, the Club will still retain a considerable sum in balance gained--over and above the operating expenses.

At present the Club is training several men under the general tutelage of Emerson Carpenter, aviation instructor, who has soloed four men within the last month. The motor of the Club ship has been replaced in the plane after a 250 hour overhaul.
