OBSERVATORY TO HOLD AN "ASTRONOMICAL FAIR"

PROCEEDS GO TO UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Doing its share toward unemployment relief in Cambridge, the Harvard Observatory on Garden Street will hold an "Astronomical Fair" on Thursday, March 30, Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. The entire staff will be on hand to assure the patrons an evening of instruction as well as pleasure, Dr. Harlow Shapley, director of the Observatory, announced last night.

Pictures of Eclipse

To give the Observatory the atmosphere of a genuine fair, there will be such attractions as booths for the sale of striking photographs of celestial bodies, a continuous moving picture of the recent total eclipse, and high powered telescopes with instructors close by to guide the visitors in glimpses of the constellations. As the principal feature of the evening, there will be an illustrated lecture at 7.30 o'clock and again at 9 o'clock by noted members of the staff.

Considered Innovation

The project is considered a great innovation at the Observatory and is attracting widespread interest among the residents of Cambridge and Boston who have attended the annual "Open Nights" held during the last 12 years. The idea has been under discussion for some time, and is to be carried out in conjunction with the newly-formed committee of Harvard professors in charge of faculty contributions to the Cambridge unemployment relief fund. A unique feature of the affair is the provision for rain checks" in case inclement weather prevents observation.
