Harvard is represented by two men on the Richard Byrd expedition to Little America. Stanley D. Pierce '33, an engineering student, left Monday morning with the ship "Bear of Oakland," as Assistant Communications Engineer. Thomas S. McCaleb, Instructor in Geographical Exploration will leave with the second boat which departs next week, and will travel as far as Canal Zone with the party.
The institute of Geographical Exploration, under the direction of Mr. McCaleb, has devised a small receiving set specially adapted for sled work. The instrument is very compact as well as powerful, and the model of it is now at the Geographical Institute. A low power transmitter is combined in the field communicator.
The Harvard short wave radio station WIDMW will handle messages relating to the geophysical explorations of the polar expedition. Messages will be sent from Little America to Buenos Aires and relayed to the Harvard station.
