Substantial Lead in Boston League Held by Chess Club

Team Won Championship Last Year And Expects to Retain Title

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

If the University Chess Team can conquer its most formidable opponents in the Boston Metropolitan Chess League, the Boston City Club, and the Bay State Club, it will be well on its way to the title.

Last year, the team won the championship handily, and to date has won five matches out of five played. The members of the "A" team are: John A. Moore, '38; Sidney S. Coggan, 3L; Arthur M. Sandburg; Jackson Palmer, Jr., '30; John L. Foster, Capt., '38; and Herbert C. Gates, '40.

In the "B" section of the league, the situation is quite different. The team has won three matches, tied two, and lost two. The "B" team also won its section championship last year, and is by no means out of the running this year. Its members, mostly Freshmen are: Kenneth White, '39; John J. Ferlanser, Capt., '40; Robert M. Robbins, '40; John C. Perham, '40; Howard P. Mendel, '40; and William P. Sockman, '40.

Both teams play on Friday nights.
