LETTERMEN ASSEMBLE TO PICK NEW CAPTAIN

22 Candidates Meet This Afternoon to Select Grid Leader; Lowry, Lovett, Gardella Mentioned

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 1939 gridiron squad has already hung up its moleskins for good, and its last act will be to elect the 1940 leader. This afternoon at 3 o'clock 22 lettermen meet in Dillon Field House and cast their ballots to find a successor to ill-fated Torbie Macdonald.

If there were an ounce of superstition in any one of the men prominently mentioned for the captaincy, the honor of leading a Harvard football team would be shunned. Four Junior lettermen, Bill Brown, Joe Gardella, Gene Lovett, and Don Lowry, are leading candidates from their class. Burgy Ayres, Chub Peabody, and Charley Spreyer are the chief Sophomore nominees.

Including Ernic Sargeant, who was voted a letter although he was unable to play against Yale, there will be 22 men voting this afternoon. In that number there are nine Seniors, nine Sophomores, and four Juniors.
