Characteristics Of Kirkland and Leverett Related

Kirkland Stresses "House Spirit" As Independence Marks Leverett

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

(This is the third of a series of five articles that the CRIMSON is running in an attempt to assist Freshmen in making their choice of Houses. This and the subsequent articles will deal with different phases of the individual Houses. The articles are run in the order in which the information has been received.)

KIRKLAND HOUSE

Because it is smaller and plainer than the rest of the Houses, Kirkland frequently has been overlooked by the Freshman. Almost more than any other House, it has "House Spirit" exemplified to a great extent in the annual year book and widespread participation in inter-House athletics.

Its leading fields are Economics and English with Arthur E. Munroe, lecturer in Economics, and Charles E. Carr, instructor in English heading the tutoring staff. Particularly strong in English, its library is lodged in a quaint colonial House and consists of about ten rooms.

Many Extra-Curricular Activities

Because of exceedingly profitable dances, the House is way ahead when it comes to activities, particularly dramatics. Also a large number of minor activities, such as victorla dances, photographic exhibits, etc. are sponsored by the House Committee.

It is hardly possible to dwell long on Kirkland without mentioning their distinguished record in the Straus Trophy competition, in which it has had by far the most consistenly high average.

LEVERETT HOUSE

If any two things are distinctive of Leverett House they are its Glee Club and its liberalism. However, Kenneth B. Murdock, House Master, so fosters the spirit of complete independence of its members from compulsion to take part in House activities that neither a clenched fist nor a perfect baritone are prerequisites for admittance.

Leverett has a well rounded personnel of both students and tutors with the Social Sciences particularly well represented. The library is thoroughly comfortable, and well stocked in the fields of English and philosophy.

Glee Club and Liberalism Discussed

Active "House spirit" is manifested more in the Glee Club than in inter-House athletics, although the latter are generally participated in. Supplementing its Glee Club, is a chamber music group.

Liberalism has become associated with the House not so much through the number of "Reds" it harbours as from the activity of several of its leaders. Three of the last four heads of the Teachers' Union have come from its staff and it has ranking members in liberal college organizations.
