SEVEN VETERANS BACK AS SOCCER TEAM MEETS

Although two stars from last year's team have left college unexpectedly and although last year's Freshman team was somewhat below average and little material can be garnered from its remains, Coach Jack Carr is not in the least possibility about the 1929 soccer team.

There are still seven lettermen back from the undefeated 1938 team, which fleshed up the season at the head of the New England League. Outstanding among these is Captain Howard Mendel, star of the team last year and second highest scorer in the League, who should be the sparkplug of the Crimson booters this fall.

Losses at Half and Full

The chief losses are at halfback and fullback, where positions were left vacant by Robin Scully, who decided to graduate in three years, and Nap Hardenberg, a resident of South Africa, who has left school to join the British army. It Carr can fill these positions with reserves or Jayvees from last year or with two of the three or four capable kickers from the class of '42, he will have few major worries.

The squad turned out for practice yesterday but the little information could be gathered then as to the calibre of the team, for the turnout was incomplete. Carr led the team through an easy practice in fundamentals heading and trapping and then dismissed them till today, when a larger squad is expected.

Freshman Coach James MacDonald was jubilant over the turnout of Yardlings, for although it was short in quantity it was long in quality. Only twelve men showed up, but several of these were prep school stars or experienced players.

Lettermen back for the Varsity besides Mendel, are George Hanford, David Ives, William Edgar, Arthur Page, James Rousmaniere, and Prentice Willetts, of whom only two, Page and Rousmaniere, are Seniors.
