COACH BOLLES DICK HARLOW WIN LETTERS

Hanford Assumes Charge of Intercollegiate Athletics

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although bracketed with Dick Harlow in the awards of honorary major letters, crew coach Tom Bolles will not follow the football mentor into the armed services, Major William J. Bingham '16 states last night.

Bingham, who has not yet dropped all his duties as director of athletics, although officially on leave of absence, said that the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports voted Harlow a major H in recognition of his work here for the past eight years before he accepted a commission as Lieutenant Commander in the Navy.

After making the award to Harlow, he said, the members decided that the success of Crimson crews during Bolles' six years as coach was reason enough to give him an honorary letter, but that he had "no intimation that Bolles is leaving."

Okays Regular Letters

Besides these awards, the Committee approved the 136-letters won by athletes participating in fall sports and also passed on the granting of major football H's to Gordy Lyle and Wally Flynn, both of whom failed to get into the Yale game.

Because of Bingham's leave of absence, Dean Hanford was named acting chairman of the Committee, although no one was appointed to take over the position of director of athletics.

The Committee took no action on changing any sports schedules, waiting until the fate of college students has been decided and announced. In the meantime, Bingham stated, "We will continue our regular schedules as long as we have students and transportation. However, the spring schedules will have to be changed because final exams have been moved forward."
