Old Rivals Army, Columbia, Cornell Back on Crimson '48 Gridiron Slate

Three Away Games Planned Next Year

Harvard shucked off war-time expedients for traditional rivals yesterday as William J. Bingham '16, director of the H.A.A., announced an eight-game 1948 Crimson gridiron schedule including contests with Army, Columbia, and Cornell.

With Boston University, Rutgers, Virginia, and Western Maryland slashed from next year's campaign, the slate lists away-games with Cornell, Princeton, and Army, with Columbia opening the season at Harvard Stadium on October 2.

Rumor has it, however, that a ninth fracas, with Amherst, will actually open next fall's hostilities in Cambridge on September 25. Repeaters from this year are Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Princeton, Brown, and Yale.

Columbia will battle the Crimson for the first time since 1901 while both the Big Red and the Cadets will renew long-standing pre-war series. Outside of the Ivy League, Army has engaged Harvard more time (28) than any other school except Williams (30).

The Crimson's journey to Ithaca on October 9 will mark the first invasion of Cornell territory since 1896 and the first gridiron meeting with the Big Red since 1941. On the following weekend Dick Harlow's squad will visit West Point after a 13-year absence.

The record book shows that since 1877 Crimson football teams have won 16 out of 28 games from Army, six out of six against Columbia (1877 to 1901), and 11 out of 14 against Cornell. 1948 Football Schedule Columbia  October 2 Cornell at Ithaca  October 9 Army at West Point  October 16 Dartmouth  October 23 Holy Cross  October 30 Princeton at Princeton  November 6 Brown  November 13 Yale  November 20
