Track Squad Leaves Next Thursday To Compete in IC4A Championships

Six field men, two runners, and a hurdler--representing the backbone of the Varsity track squad--will go to Philadelphia next weekend for the IC4A championships, Coach Jaakko Mikkola disclosed yesterday.

This group, which hopes to pick up where it left off last Saturday at the Nonagonals, includes Harvard's 1-2 punch in the 16-pound hammer throw, Jack Fisher and Sam Felton; Captain Wes Flint in the high and low hurdles; Freshman javelin find, Don Trimble; pole vaulters Pete Harwood and Bill Lawrence; high jumper Gene Harrigan; Bill Jackson, who will put the shot and double in the discuss with Felton; Captain-elect Frank Gurley in the mile; and Ted Withington, whose 49-second anchor leg last Saturday convinced Jaakko that he was capable of meeting IC4A 440 competition.

With the exception of Harwood, Lawrence, and Harrigan (who will not have to compete in trials and so will leave Friday night) the Varsity will entrain Thursday night in order to be on time for the trials Friday. The meet will be at Franklin Field.

Lacks Western Power

Still not back to its ante-bellum national footing, this year's IC4A meet will be pretty much of an Eastern affair. Neither Southern Cal nor Illinois will be around. Of the 44 colleges which will be on hand, NYU, winner of the winter IC4A's, will be favored to repeat.

Stiffest competition will probably come from Manhattan, Penn State, Harvard, Navy, Rhode Island State Army, and Brown. The Crimson was fourth in the winter championships.

Tuesday night, members of the current track team will take time out from the books to rub elbows with Harvard track greats from way back, at the first track banquet in several decades. The dinner is scheduled for 7 o'clock at the Harvard Club of Boston.

Bingham To Speak

Bill Bingham will be one of the principal speakers, and during the course of the evening the annual improvement prizes will be awarded. Any former member of the track team-may attend by making reservations with manager George Caploe (Longwood 4770) by noon Monday. Retired groundskeeper Mike Holly will be the guest of honor.

The banquet might fittingly be termed a "victory" banquet, since the winter and spring track teams this year have scored wins over Yale in two dual meets, as well as in the indoor IC4A's and the recent Nonagonals.
