Powerful Quaker Swimmers May Mar Crimson's Record

By Charles W. Balley

Until last Friday night Penn looked like just another doormat for the powerful Varsity swimmers. Then the Quakers rose up to topple the Green by the same score the Crimson had previously registered, thereby adding another row of wrinkles to the plentifully-furrowed brow of Coach Hal Ulan.

Whether or not the Red and Blue is really a "sleeper" which can spin the Varsity's undefeated record will be seen tonight at 8:30 o'clock in the Blockhouse pool, when Captain Chuck Hoelzer and his mates take to the water for the last time before the big meet with Yale next Saturday.

The mainspring of any Penn upset will be Don DeForest, ace two-event man who apparently is the only topnotcher among the visitor's ranks. DeForest, probably the second best backstroker in the country, will also take on Ted Norris and Jerry German in the 220.

Things aren't as black as this might indicate, though. Norris is almost certain to win the 440, as he has already done seven times this year, and diver Tom Drohan, with six firsts and a second in competition so far, is a god but in the dive.

Hoclzer and German should give the Penn ace his closest races of the season, while Milt Buzby in the 150 freestyle and Tom Woods in the 150 backstroke have both shown great improvement and are also looking for wine tonight.
