Alfred D. Simpson, professor of Education, joined other prominent Massachusetts educators yesterday in asking the General Court's Education Committee to recommend more funds for the improvement of public schools.
Imposing amounts of evidence were presented by Simpson to illustrate the run down condition of public schools in the Commonwealth. More than 80 pre Civil War buildings and 176 one-teacher schools are still in use in the Massachusetts education system.
Simpson strongly urged passage of S-130 which provides $40,000,000 in state aid to the public schools. Last year the legislature allocated only $15,000,000 towards elementary and secondary education.
According to S-130, the state funds would be distributed to localities not in proportion to population but on a basis of need.
