Conant Says Red Teachers, Should Be Refused Post

President Conant said Saturday that all card-carrying Communists should be barred from the teaching profession. He spoke at Eugene, Oregon, at the University of Oregon's 75th anniversary convocation.

"But," Conant stated, "with this single exception, which is the unique product of our century, I maintain that a professor's political views are of no concern to the University; nor are his activities within the law as a private citizen."

This is his first recent statement dealing with the status of Communist teachers. For several years, the University has been under attack in the State House as harboring Communists on the faculty.

Conant stated, "In this period of a cold war, I do not believe the usual rules as to political parties apply to the Communist party. I am convinced that conspiracy and calculated deceit have been and are the characteristic pattern of regular Communists all over the world."
