Cornell defeated the varsity basketball team, 70 to 51, Saturday in Ithaca--the sixth straight Eastern League loss for the last place Crimson. A tight defense held the Big Red even for most of the first half, but in the last 20 minutes, ood set-shooting by the Ithacans enabled them to pull ahead.
Ed Smith turned in a fine performance for the losers. In addition to scoring 24 points, he took off 21 rebounds, the highest figure for both teams. Paul Gorwin, high scorer for Cornell with 21 points, got only five field goals while Smith was guarding him.
Bob Bramhall, starting in place of flu-stricken Jim Gabler, made up for the absence of the Crimson's second highest scorer by putting in 13 points. Coach Norm Shepard may open with Bramhall tomorrow against Princeton, though Gabbler has now completely form the flu.
