Nine Reaches For First EIL Victory Against Columbia

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Still reeling from its 10 to 5 trouncing by Navy Thursday, the varsity baseball team will face Columbia in its second EIL game at 3:00 p.m. today. And it will need better pitching than it has shown so far to outscore the Blue.

The Crimson will need every run it can get today too, since Columbia boat Navy, 6 to 4, in the Middies' EIL opener.

If Andy Ward starts, that pitching could materialize. The right-handed ace-whose hurling was curtailed last season for disciplinary reasons-has been out since pitching the first four innings of a 9 to 2 victory over MIT ten days ago.

Sore arms being what they are, Ward may still not reach the mound. Other possible starters are John Arnold, Bill Chauncey, whose recent hitting has been good, or John Cooke. Sophomore Ken Rossano, otherwise a possibility, went eight innings against Navy. Dick Clasby will probably start behind the plate.

Krinsky Disabled

The infield will also be slightly below full strength this afternoon because of the absence of shortstop Ed Krinsky. Krinsky pulled a hamstring sliding into third against Tufts last week, and will not be able to play for three weeks. Taking his place will be sophomore Bones Mackinney.

Otherwise, regular starters will make up the infield. Fast-moving Ray Maesaka at third is sure to start, and Big John Maher will cover first. Dick Hoffman and Art Noyes will probably trade off at second.

Captain Dick Scheer, Bill Cleary, and Don Butters will take left, center, and right fields respectively.
