Faculty Body Raises $6,000 To Aid Furry

After two months campaigning to raise funds to defend Wendell H. Furry, associate professor of Physics, the Furry Legal Aid Committee has raised over $6,000, Edwin C. Kemble, professor of Physics and chairman of the group, announced yesterday.

About 300 members of the University faculties, and "an appreciable number from outside," as well as a few students, have contributed so far, Kemble said.

The amount raised did not surprise Kemble. "The sum pretty well meets our expectations," he said, "and we hope to raise a great deal more as more people become aware of the issues involved. When we started out, we expected to be able to collect $10,000 and I still think we'll meet that."

He added that some forecasters had predicted the committee would succeed in raising only "a couple of hundred dollars." The really unpredictable factor, he felt, was more likely to be how long the responses would stretch out.

No Estimate Yet

Definite developments in the courts will have to come, however, before the committee can make any accurate estimate of the total sum necessary for Furry's defense. The January letter of appeal said expenses then immediately predictable were about $5,000, and might easily double, since appeals to the Supreme Court were likely. Kemble said yesterday they could reach $15,000.

Defense motions to dismiss the contempt of Congress indictments against Furry and Leon J. Kamin '49, research assistant in psychology at McGill, were filed March 4.
