Rod Laver of Australia won the $25,000 U.S. Professional Tennis Championship by beating Spain's Andre Gimeno at the Longwood Cricket Club yesterday.
A booming serve and superior ground stroke carried the 28-year-old Laver to his second straight pro title 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5. The victory was worth $3600.
A crowd of 4000, begging for an upset, roared when the lanky star from Barcelona grabbed the first set, but Laver promptly swept the next three. Ken Rose-wall salvaged third place by defeating fellow Aussie Fred Stolle 10-5 in a pro set.
