Freshmen Pass Move Requesting Parietal Changes

The Freshman Council recently passed a motion recommending that Saturday night parietal hours for freshmen be extended to 11:30 p.m., at least temporarily.

Alexander Korns '62 sponsored the motion, which calls for an "experimental period" for the lengthened parietal hours during the spring term. Conditions for the 11:30 permissions would require that no couple be present in at room without at least two other couples.

Further stipulations state that the intention to entertain feminine company after the present deadline of 8 p.m. must be communicated to the appropriate proctor and University authorities at least 48 hours in advance, and that "there be normal lighting in all rooms at all times" during the evening.

Korns proposed the move mainly as a relief to scholarship students, who are allowed only $100 during the year for "incidentals" and thus must "either bankrupt themselves or refrain from having more than one date every three weeks," he explained in a Yardling editorial.

In a similar decision, members of Kirkland House recently expressed interest in a proposal to extend Friday night parietal hours to 10 p.m. in the Junior Common Room.
