Columbia Comeback Nips Fencers, 14-13

After jumping to leads of 11-5 and 13-10, the varsity fencing team lost to Columbia, 14 to 13, Saturday in New York.

The Crimson epee squad beat its Lion counterpart by a 7-2 count, with Allan Gardner and Bill Bennett each winning two matches, and Jim Robert taking all three of his contests.

In foil, captain Dave Johnson scored three wins to lead the Crimson to a 5-4 victory. But the sabre team was swamped by the Lions, 8 to 1, to provide the home team with its one-point victory margin.

The varsity looked much better than in its match with Cornell last week. The fencers' next outing will be against Trinity Feb. 6 at the I.A.B. The following Saturday the team travels to New York University, where it can expect a tough match with a squad that trounced Columbia, 22 to 5.
