Swimmers Defeat Springfield, 76-19

By Rudolf V. Ganz jr.

The varsity swimming team opened it's season Saturday with a leisurely 76-19 win over Springfield at the I.A.B. No race was really a contest, giving coach Bill Brooks plenty of opportunity to experiment with the lineup.

The Crimson opened with an easy win in the medley relay, as Bob Kaufmann, Frank Wood, Bob Price, and Allen Berg churned over the 400 yard course in 3:54, to finish more than a lap ahead of their opponents. Kaufmann, who is still recovering from a bout of mononucleosis, swam only in the relays, passing up the backstroke and the individual medley.

Sophomore Bill Chadsey turned in the best performance of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning easily in 2:28.8, some five seconds slower than the top mark in last year's Yale meet. Teammate John McJennett was close in his wake to complete a Crimson sweep of the event.

First place honors fell to Springfield only twice all day, in diving and the 200-yard backstroke. Jeff Lewy, the Crimson's top diver, did not compete, and Jay Shelton, who showed great promise with the freshmen last year, made costly mistakes on two dives. With Kaufmann out of the backstroke race, Springfield's Bill Stearns was able to squeeze out a victory over the Crimson's Dave Bennett and Dave Reisen.

The Freshmen won the preliminary contest in a 58-37 romp.
