HDC Group to Direct Loeb Summer Plays

After nearly a month of deliberation, four hand-picked members of the HDC received Faculty approval this week to manage and produce plays at the Loeb Drama Center in connection with the Harvard Summer School.

Under the direction of John D. Hancock '61, the Loeb will present four plays rom among those written by Brecht, Shaw, Shakespeare, or O'Neill. Charles Hayord '63 and Joel F. Henning '61 are the producers, and Ian Strasfogel '61 will deign the sets.

Robert H. Chapman, Director of the Loeb Drama Center, will supervise the productions, while the Standing Committee on Dramatics of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences will retain its general control of the Loeb's summer program.

Students attending the Harvard Summer School from other universities as well as Harvard students and Faculty will participate as actors and staff members. Interviews and auditions for interested students here will be open by application at the Loeb Drama Center Monday through Friday, April 17-21, from 7 10 p.m., and Saturday, April 22, from to 5 p.m.

Beginning the following week, the four managers will travel for auditions to nearby colleges and universities. They will visit, among others, Yale, Princeton, Columbia. B.U., Radcliffe, Barnard and Wellesley.

Need Not Enroll

Those participating in the Loeb's activities will not have to enroll in any courses but will be granted all the University privileges open to any student in the summer School, Hancock said. A limited number of grants-in-aid will be available for highly qualified actors.

Announcement of selection of the four plays, which will run for two weeks each, should come in the next month, Hancock said. The choice of the plays will depend somewhat on the casting during the next two weeks. The group will begin rehearsals for the first production early in June, according to Henning.
