The case of John W. Perdew '64 will take another turn today when three federal judges hear an injunction petition filed by Perdew and his co-defendants.
The injunction, if allowed, will bar Georgia state, county, and city officials from further arrests and persecution of civil rights demonstrators. It charges officials with a "willful, unlawful and openly avowed scheme. . .to intimidate and discourage Negro citizens of Georgia from the exercise of their civil rights, including the right to vote."
In another local move yesterday, the NAACP Legal defense and Educational Fund filed a motion in the U.S. Supreme Court asking the court to set bail for Perdew and three other Northern college students in the Americas, Ga., county jail. The students, all volunteer civil rights workers, were indicted Aug. 8 for "inciting to insurrection." They were leaders in a drive to break the color bar at a local movie theater.
