HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
John C. Pelzel, professor of Anthropology, has been appointed director of the Harvard Yenching Institute. The post has been vacant since 1961, when Edwin O. Reischauer retired to become ambassador to Japan.
Pelsel has been in charge of the institute's Visiting Scholars Program since it was established in 1964. He speaks guests Japanese and reads Chinese, and served in Japan on the staff of the Supreme Commander during the Allied occupation.
The new director will retain his present position as assistant curator of Far Eastern Ethnology in the Peabody Museum.
Glenn W. Baster, lecturer in Far Eastern Languages and acting director of the Institute since 1961, will continue as associate director.
