Football Foundation Honors Bersin For Superiority as Scholar-Athlete

Al Bersin, star guard of the Harvard varsity football team, has been chosen as one of 13 outstanding scholar-athletes by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.

As a recipient of the $500 NFF scholarship, Bersin is in the company of such outstanding college seniors as U.C.L.A. quarterback Gary Beban, Stanford fullback John Root, Yale guard John McCarthy, and Princeton halfback Bob Weber.

Bersin and the 12 other honored athletes will receive their awards at the tenth annual Hall of Fame Dinner in New York on December 5.

In two years as first string guard, the chunky Bersin was one of the mainstays of the Crimson squad. His rough blocking helped account for Vic Gatto's outstanding season this year and Bob Leo's in 1966. Bersin was named last night to All-Ivy honors for this year.

Even while playing football, Bersin has maintained an "A" average and had only an occasional "B" to mar his record. He won the James B. Conant Award for the best essay on a subject of scientific interest.

Class Marshal

In addition to his athletic and academic achievements, Bersin has been active in a number of extracurricular activities. Most recently he was elected second Class Marshal. He is secretary of the Kirkland House Committee and vicepresident of Pi Eta. He is also active in the Phillips Brooks House Columbia Point Program and the Senior Associate Program.
