Faculty Approves Biochemistry Dept.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences unanimously approved the creation of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at its meeting yesterday.

The Department will replace the Standing Committee in the same field on July 1.

No one voiced any opposition, and the motion passed quickly after two of its proponents -- Paul M. Doty, professor of Chemistry and J.C. Street, professor of Physics -- spoke.

A number of Faculty members are opposed to the plan, because they fear it will hurt the Biology and Chemistry Departments. They have had an opportunity to state their position before, however, and apparently they decided not to carry their opposition to the Faculty meeting itself.
