Contributions to University Fell More than $6 Million Last Year

Harvard's total fund-raising dropped more than $6 million in the last academic year.

An annual survey of gifts to 50 selected colleges and universities showed that Harvard collected $44,464,000 in 1965-66 and only $38,346,000 in 1966-67.

Of the top ten schools, Yale, Cornell, M.I.T. and the Universities of California, New York, and Chicago showed similar declines. M.I.T.'s drop in funds ($23,579,000) was the largest.

Some of the institutions listed had already completed fund-raising goals in previous years to meet Ford Foundation challenge grants, so that there was a decline in current fund totals.

Harvard Top Fund-Raiser

Despite the decrease, Harvard remained in both 1965-66 and 1966-67 the largest fund raiser, surpassing Yale, the second, by $4,936,000. California, Cornell, New York, Chicago, Stanford, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and M.I.T. followed in that order.

Radcliffe's funds also declined in 1966-67, by $448,000. Comparative figures for the seven sister schools showed that Radcliffe's funds in '66-67 were the lowest ($3,922,000). Vassar, Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley and Radcliffe followed in that order.
