Cambridge Police Arrest Students As They Put up Anti-War Posters

Cambridge Police arrested six Harvard students early yesterday morning on charges of idle and disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace anddefacing private property.

The students, who now face up to one year in jail and heavy fines, had been putting up posters about the October 4 anti-war march sponsored by the Worker-Student Alliance faction of SDS.

All six were released on personal recognizance until their trial October 16.

Cambridge police made the arrests at 3:20 a.m. near Claverly Hall. Harvard police were present but did not actually participate in the arrests, according to John Levinson '73, one of the students involved.

Other Arrests

Others arrested were John Berman '73, Lawry Hemphill '72, Peter H. Knapp, a graduate student a Social Relations, Vann R. McGee '71, and Ellen J. Messing '72.

Levinson said that Harvard police followed them for about 30 minutes before the Cambridge police made the arrests. He also stated that the Harvard police had told the Cambridge police that the students were members of SDS.
