Five Tops Win, 79-67, But Falls to Yale, 86-75

By Jonat Arlson

The Crimson basketball team lost a point advantage midway through the second half against Brown on Saturday night in Providence, but eight straight tallies by junior forward Mike Janczewski gave Harvard the lead again, and the Crimson went on to win, 79-67.

On Friday night. Harvard fell behind early to a strong Yale squad, never getting closer than seven points because of ball handling, and lost, 86-75.

The victory over Brown, which had upset Dartmouth the night before, was Crimson's first Ivy League action winter, and made its Ivy record, 1-6. Harvard, 7-11 overall, has now won as many games as it won last year when it finished with a 7-18 mark.

At Brown, the Crimson jumped ahead 19-5, before the Bruins could score another goal. Then Harvard, fouling frequently and failing to rebound aggressively, watched its lead decrease to 36-28 at half-time.

With eight minutes remaining in the game, Brown went ahead briefly. Joe Stanislaw hit a 22-foot jump shot to put the Crimson back in the lead; then Janczewski, who finished with ?? points, scored on a three-point play?? lied two long jump shots, and added a free throw before the Bruins scored again.

"I think my rebounding made the difference." said Janzcewski after the game. "When I'm aggressive on the board, the whole game falls into place," he exhorted.

Junior guard Dale Dover, who occasionally worked the inside against the Brown zone defense, paced Harvard with ?? points. The Crimson's other guard, Bozek, sat out most of the second half with four fouls, but added 14 tallies. Captain Ernie Hardy, who dominated the play with 15 rebounds, scored 12 points.

At Yale, Harvard had one of its best shooting nights with 47 per cent from the floor, but frequent turnovers cost the Crimson numerous scoring opportunities.

Behind 50-36 at half-time, Harvard narrowed the margin to seven points halfway through the second half when the play went for seven minutes without scoring. But a series of four turnovers then destroyed any chance of taking the lead the Crimson might have had.

We had 21 turnovers against Yale, and think our lack of practice because of the reading period hurt us more than it hurt them "said Harvard coach Bob Harrison yesterday.

Yale's second team All-Ivy guard Jim Hogan led all scorers with 23 points, and teammate Jack Langer, playing his first game since Yale was placed on probation by the NCAA, added 11. Captain Ernie Hardy, who is averaging over 13 rebounds per game, paced the Crimson with 22 tallies and grabbed 15 rebounds. Dover, who is now within nine points of being the tenth leading scorer in Harvard's basketball history, had 20 tallies at Yale.

Harvard's freshman basketball squad, behind a 26-point and 20-rebound performance by center Floyd Lewis, topped Brown's freshmen, 97-78.

Behind for the entire first half, the freshmen exploded for 62 points in the second half while holding the Bruins to 42 tallies with their best defensive effort to date.
