Saturday Was Ed's Day; Marinaro Cited Again

By Robert W. Gerlach

Cornell's Heisman Trophy candidate Ed Marinaro ran for 230 yards and three touchdowns Saturday against Yale to win his second consecutive "Ivy League Back of the Week" title.

Marinaro's three touchdowns were the winning margin in Cornell's 31-10 victory over Yale. The unbeaten Big Red now share the Ivy League lead with undefeated Dartmouth, and Yale and Harvard trail the leaders by two full games.

Big Back

Marinaro's performance was particularly rewarding, for the big back, averaging over 200 yds. per game, had picked up only 92 yds, in his first two Yale games.

Cornell's halfback needs only eight yards rushing against Columbia this Saturday before the home crowd in Ithaca, N.Y.. to break the NCAA career rushing record of 3.867 yds., currently held by Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens of Oklahoma. Marinaro has four more games to easily surpass the 4,000 yd. barrier.

Marinaro not only leads the Ivy League in rushing, but he also now heads the list in total offense and scoring. The Cornell senior passed Columbia's Don Jackson last weekend. Jackson fell to second while rolling up non-Ivy territory against Rutgers.
