Rally Links War To Rent Problem

The Cambridge Tenants Organizing Council (CTOC), yesterday afternoon staged a rally at City Hall to protest rising rents and the "national economic crisis" that it says contributes to Cambridge's inadequate housing.

"I do not expect any good from any rally anywhere at any time," Barbara Kelly, CTOC spokesman, said. However, Kelly said that CTOC felt the rally appropriate given today's antiwar demonstration in Washington.

About 75 people, some carrying signs saying "No increases, no evictions," and "Stop Rent Control Sabotage," Listened to various speakers from CTOC and the Tenant Assistance Project.

"The housing crisis and war stem from the same source-a government that is considerably more interested in profits than the welfare of its people. It has the money to send junk to the moon, but not to build decent housing," Kelly said.
