Yale's Berkeley College Meets Quincy Despite Protests of Gridiron Standings

Quincy House gridders tangle with Yale's Berkeley College eleven in championship tackle football action here this afternoon in the wake of protest lodged yesterday by the Eliot House football team.

The Eliot House team, with a 2-0-2 season record, claimed the right to meet the top Yale team, since Eliot upset first place Quincy, 6-0, last week. But Floyd S. Wilson, director of Intramural Athletics, yesterday ruled in favor of Quincy on the basis of its superior 4-1 record.

With two points per win and one point for a tie, Quincy bested Eliot in season points, 8-6. Eliot played one less game than Quincy because rain forced the cancellation of an earlier meeting with Lowell House.

"Quincy's first place ranking is due to one more game played then Eliot and not necessarily superior ability." Mike Graff. Eliot House athletic secretary said yesterday. "There's no doubt about it: we got screwed.

Graff reasoned that if a win were deducted from Quincy's standings, then the team would be tied with Eliot for first place with six points per team. "Although we're tied, we best Quincy last week and so logically, we should play the Yale champion," Graff said.

Wilson said his decisions was based on a vote by House athletic secretaries last week to select the team is first place the day before the Yale contest. "There's no question," he said. "Quincy will play Berkeley College."

Harvard intramural games that were cancelled due to rain will not be rescheduled, he said. "There is a general feeling among the teams not to extend the sport schedule beyond Thanksgiving," he said.

The Quincy-Berkeley duel begins on Webuter field at 2 p.m. The Eliot gridders tackle Yale's second-place team, Silliman College, at 1:30 p.m.

Fourth-place Winthrop House meets Colleges at 1 p.m. and third-place Lowell clashes with Stiles Morse Colleges at 2:30 p.m.

Touch football teams from Lowell and Berkeley each other as Harvard freshmen take on Silliman College at 1:30 p.m. today.

The intramural soccer champion, Eliot House, vies with Pierson College while Leverett battles Calboun College. Both games are at 1 p.m.
