Johnny Pesky, former Boston playing star and manager, and onetime major league pitcher Stan Williams were named coaches of the Red Sox yesterday. They will replace coaches Eddie Popowski and Lee Stang, who Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson discharged at the end of the season last month.
Pesky will serve as first base coach and batting instructor, returning to uniform after six years with the Boston broadcasting and television crew. He had served as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Williams, who will serve as pitching coach, was a major league pitcher from 1958 through 1973 with the Los Angel13s Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals.
