Hughes, Worker At Harvard Club, Arrested Thursday

George Hughes, a janitor for the Commonwealth Ave. Harvard Club, was arraigned yesterday at Boston Municipal Court for allegedly murdering a 26-year-old woman Thursday night at the Bradford Hotel.

Hughes said yesterday the victim was trying to rob him, and he stabbed her in self-defense. The police have not identified the woman.

Hughes, aged 34, has worked for the Harvard Club for only a few months. Richard A. Vitali, manager of the Harvard Club, said yesterday.

Hughes could not meet the $50,000 bail and is being held in the Charles Street jail awaiting his trial, scheduled for April 18.
