Thinclads Take Tri-Meet, Topping B.C. and UMass

The Harvard women's indoor track squad garnered top honors in 10 of 13 events to defeat Boston College and UMass, 71-51-12, in Saturday's tri-meet at the ITT.

Although B.C has never beaten Harvard, and UMass never process much of a threat, the Crimson was a bit uneasy entering Saturday's match. Coach Pappy Hunt felt that Harvard, plagued by the injuries of freshman sprinting sensation. Theresa Moore, and number-one high jumper and co-captain. Karen Gray, might lack the depth necessary to defeat what he called "the best B.C team ever."

But B.C. managed first-place finishes in only three events high jump, 55-meter dash, and 200-meter run. In all three cases, however, Harvard's competitor was sidelined due to injuries UMass could not come up with a single win.

With Marie Acacia's 42'-41/4" shot put and Marquita Patterson's 16'-11 1/4" long jump, Harvard gained an early lead in field events. B.C., facing no competition in the high jump, captured all 11 points to take control for the first and only time in the meet.

The transition from cross-country to indoor track obviously has not fazed sophomores Jenny Sticker and Kate Wiley, who were both named to the All-American cross-country squad earlier this year. They finished one-two in the 1500-meter race and Stickler's 4.20.9 set a new facility record. They later went on to give the two-mile relay team an easy victory.
