Weekend Victories Move Crimson Closer to EIBL Championship

By Mike Knobler

After two years of finishing out of the running, the Harvard baseball team finds itself in the lead as the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) season drags towards its conclusion.

The 14-3-1 Crimson's sweep of 8-6 Dartmouth Saturday eliminated Dartmouth, Yale and Brown from the title chase, leaving only Navy standing between Harvard and its first EIBL championship in three years. Rain postponed the 11-4-1 Midshipmen's doubleheader with Cornell yesterday, and the Big Red can't play the games today because of final.

Should Navy lose one or more to Cornell, Harvard will win the EIBL crown. Otherwise, the two teams will meet at a neutral site to determine the champion. The second game of Harvard's April 17 twin bill at Navy ended in a tie because of darkness, but league rules state that a tie cannot play a part in determining the champion.

Down to the Wire

If necessary, the tiebreaker, which will probably be played this weekend, will be a seven-inning game. If Navy wins, a nine-inning game would be played for the championship. Otherwise, the Crimson will nab the laurels.

Harvard played like a champion Saturday, controlling the opener from the first inning enroute to an 8-3 romp and demonstrating its poise in the nightcap by staving off a late Big Green charge and rebounding to a 12-6, nine-inning victory. "We were within an inch of losing [the second game]," Captain Brad Bauer said.

The bat men watched a six-run lead disappear in the last two innings of regulation play, then saw Dartmouth shortstop Ray Bascio carry the winning run to third in the bottom of the eighth. But the Big Green stranded Bascio, and the Harvard bats came alive in the top of the ninth.

Bauer led things off with a single, and catcher Vinnie Martelli moved him to second with a walk. First baseman Ed Farrell singled in the go-ahead run, right fielder Don Allard scored Martelli on a sacrifice fly, and the rally was on. Chris Schindler and Scott Vierra added RBI singles, and Bauer, who started things off, ended them as well with another single that drove in two runs and brought Harvard's tally to 12.

While the second game's excitement came in the ninth. Harvard's four-run first inning dominated the opener. Center fielder Bruce Weller started things with a single, Elliott Rivers followed with a walk and Bauer loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. Martelli started his five-for-seven, six-RBI day with the first of his two triples, and Harvard led 3-0. Two outs later Jay McNamara's single scored Martelli and the Crimson had all the runs it would need.

On the Job

Then the Charlie Marchese show began, as the sophomore right hander struck out 10 Big Green batters without allowing a single walk. Marchese gave up just six hits in his second straight stellar performance. Last week he allowed Army a mere four hits.

In the second game Bill Doyle started out recreating his one-hitter against Cornell last week. But one of two hits Doyle gave up Saturday was a two-run homer, and he left after 5 2/3 innings.

THE NOTEBOOK: The sweep closed the door on Dartmouth's Cinderella season. The Big Green jumped out to a 6-0 mark before dropping six of their next eight games... Bill Larson upped his record to 7-1 with his victory in the second game... Marchese sent his record to 5-1 with his win in the opening game... Martelli had the game-winning RBI in the first game, while Farrell had it in the second.
