The Harvard men's volleyball team gave powerful East Stroudsburg University a scare in the East Coast Championships Saturday at West Point.

However, East Stroudsburg, the second-ranked team in the East, squeaked by the Crimson, 15-12 and 15-13, in the quarterfinal round--and then defeated Pitt to move into the finals and an anticipated showdown with top-ranked George Mason.

Harvard beat Rutgers and Army, and then routed Rutgers again in a one-game playoff, 15-7, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

The upstart Crimson stormed out of the blocks against the heavily-favored East Stroudsburg squad--jumping to a 12-10 lead in the first game. "We should have won that first game," lamented Harvard's Russell Riopelle, "but we just gave up."

And the seasoned, determined Stroudsburg spikers slammed the high-flying Cattabs back into their seats with five consecutive points.
