Alumni Select Six New Overseers; Former Defense Secretary Joins Board

Former Secretary of Defense and former Director of the CIA James R. Schlesinger '90, along with three other men and one woman, was elected earlier this month to a six-year term on Harvard's Board of Overseers, one of the University's two governing boards.

Schlesinger and the other males are financiers and the one female is a lawyer who has been active in drug control programs.

The University's 30 Overseers, under President Joan T. Bok '51, primarily are responsible for managing the University's visiting committees, composed of alumni interested in a certain academic departments, through which the board exercises some control over academic programs.

In addition, the body selects candidates for honorary degrees and must approve the appointment of a new president.

Composed of alumni-nominated and alumni-elected members, the board in secondary to the University's main controlling body, the seven-man governing Corporation.

The new members are:

* Landon T. Clay '99. Clay was chairman of Eaton Vance and has helped start ADE Corp. of Newton, Mass. He has served on the Classics visiting committee at Harvard as well as financing a professorship in Archeology and creating the Rosovsky fund to support junior faculty research.

* Mathes Fake '65. Falco '65 worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee on juvenile delinquency and as Assistant Secretary of state for narcotics matters. She has been published in a number of periodicals on drug-redated issues and she was a trustee of Radcliffe College for 12 years.

* Schlesinger. Schlesinger was Secretary of Energy under former President Carter and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He currently is a senior advisor of Shearson Lehman Brother, Inc. and has been involved in advisory councils at the Kennedy School of Government and at Georgetown University.

* John C. Whitehead. Whitehead is chairman of the international advisory board of Goldman, Sachs as well as president of the International Rescue Committee, which assists refugees around the world. He was also director of the New York Stock Exchange.

*Wesley S. Williams Jr. Williams was on the board of directors at Penn Mutual Life and Broadcast Capital Companies. He is on the executive committee of the Washington Lawyer's Committee for civil rights. He is on the visiting committee at the Divinity School and was director of the Harvard Alumni Association
